The
lesson of
“One
Hundred Thousand Welcomes”.
As
I rode through The Killarney National Park, I was schooled in Gaelic
by Dan, the carriage driver.He
drilled me on the phrase “Cead Mila Failte”, and made me a hand
written copy to assure it stuck in my mind. After an entertaining ride full of humor and mischief Dan
said, “When I come to visit you in America , and when I knock on your door, what will you say to me?“Cead Mila Failte”, I said with a laugh.
"When anyone asks me about the Irish character, I say look at the trees.
Maimed, stark and misshapen, but ferociously tenacious".

The legend of the Claddagh originates in the
small fishing village of Claddagh, on the west coast of Ireland. It endures as one of the strongest symbols of love,
friendship and loyalty that the world has ever known.
The original symbol was created by one
Richard Joyce after a harrowing life experience that took him away
from his land and his love. The
week he was to marry his sweetheart, he was kidnapped by slave
traders and taken to a kingdom in North Africa. While in servitude to a Moroccan prince, Joyce learned the
art of working precious metals. It was during this captivity that he
created the first Claddagh ring for his lost love back in Ireland.
As time passed, his master offered him
freedom to return to Ireland.Having
grown fond of the Irishman, the prince offered part of his wealthy
kingdom and the hand of his daughter in marriage.Joyce declined the offer and chose to return to his love on
the banks of Galway Bay. Upon his return home, he found that his
true love had never married.They
were soon married and he presented her with the first Claddagh ring
as a symbol of their love, friendship and loyalty.
"A life making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a
life spent doing nothing at all". George Bernard Shaw
